The challenge
Unchained Music launched with minimal organic visibility in a category dominated by incumbents. Music distribution is a market where the established names own the first page, the comparison articles and the recommendation lists, and a new platform starts from nowhere on all three. Paid channels could buy attention, but not the kind that compounds. The brief we set ourselves was blunt: build high-intent organic traffic and purchases without leaning on ad spend, and prove it month by month.
This one matters to us more than most, because Unchained Music is our own startup. The method on this page is the method we sell, tested first on a business we had to make work.
The approach
We committed to SEO as a primary channel from day one rather than a side project, and we sequenced the work deliberately.
Technical foundations came first: site structure and architecture built so that everything published later had somewhere sensible to live, and nothing fought the crawler. Then a keyword-led content programme aimed at the searches that actually convert, from high-intent comparisons to the discovery questions new artists ask. Core pages were optimised for both visibility and conversion, because ranking a page that cannot sell is a vanity exercise. And as the library grew, internal linking was refined continuously, turning a collection of pages into topical authority the whole domain benefits from.
No shortcuts, no tricks that die at the next update. Just structure, intent and consistency, compounding for 18 months.
The results
Organic sessions grew from roughly 9K a month to 48K a month at peak, a 430% increase, with consistent month-on-month growth through 2023 and 2024. Purchases attributed to organic peaked at more than 150 key events a month. Rankings that sat on page two moved to the first page across core terms, and SEO became the number one acquisition channel for the business, ahead of every paid alternative.
The full month-by-month teardown, including what we prioritised first and why, is written up in the Unchained Music playbook.
